About Opportunity Consulting

Opportunity Consulting is a growing, mission-driven consulting firm that partners with government agencies, school systems, nonprofits, foundations, and other mission-driven organizations to improve education, economic mobility, and community well-being. We take on complex challenges where strategy, policy, people, and implementation intersect, helping organizations move from big questions and competing priorities to data-informed strategies, stronger programs and systems, and meaningful results for the communities they serve.

Our work spans research and evaluation, needs assessments, strategic planning and advising, organizational improvement, leadership and capacity building, community and stakeholder engagement, and implementation support. Across that work, we value rigor, curiosity, collaboration, equity, and practical impact. We believe good consulting means listening closely to the people closest to the work, using data and evidence thoughtfully, asking hard questions, making complex information accessible, and developing solutions that can actually be put into practice.

That range means no two projects—or weeks—look quite the same. One day you might be coordinating logistics for a client meeting or training; another, tracking deadlines and deliverables, supporting a community event, preparing a spreadsheet for invoicing, troubleshooting a technology or operational issue, or making sure the many details behind a project come together smoothly and on time.

About the Role

We're looking for a Project and Operations Coordinator to join our lean team. This is an entry-level role designed for someone who is eager to learn the ins and outs of how operations and client engagements actually run, and who takes real satisfaction in making sure the details, logistics, and follow-through are successful.

We're a collaborative team, which means there aren't many layers between you and the work. You'll work closely with our project teams, coordinating the operational and administrative work that keeps projects moving so that senior team members can stay focused on client strategy and delivery. You'll learn how a consulting firm operates from the inside, work alongside experienced leaders, gain exposure to clients and projects early, and see how ideas move from a first conversation to a proposal to real-world implementation.

This is a hands-on role: you'll be trusted with real client-facing responsibilities early, and the pace and complexity of your work will grow as you demonstrate judgment and reliability. We also value curiosity, initiative, and people who want to keep learning. For someone early in their career who wants to understand how organizations work, build a versatile set of skills, and steadily take on bigger challenges, Opportunity Consulting offers a chance to learn quickly by doing work that matters.

We're also a tech-savvy team that is constantly looking for smarter and more effective ways to work. You'll have opportunities to learn and use a wide range of tools for quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, research, project management, team and client collaboration, virtual and in-person facilitation, website and social media management, visual design and content creation, communications, and knowledge management. We're also increasingly exploring how AI can strengthen research, analysis, project delivery, communications, and day-to-day operations. We expect our team to be curious and experimental with new technology while pairing it with strong judgment, critical thinking, established best practices, and company policies for responsible use.

Who You Are

We're looking for someone who is ambitious, curious, grounded, and excited to learn. You don't need to arrive knowing everything about consulting or the sectors we work in—but you should be genuinely interested in the work and eager to contribute and build your skills.

  • Mission-aligned. You're interested in education, workforce development, government, nonprofits, philanthropy, or other social-sector work—and motivated by the opportunity to help organizations strengthen outcomes and expand opportunity for the people and communities they serve.

  • Comfortable with ambiguity. You don't need every task fully defined before you start, and you can figure out a reasonable next step and go.

  • Proactive. You adjust as priorities shift and look for ways to be useful without being asked. You look for ways to contribute, anticipate what might be needed next, and want your responsibilities to grow as you demonstrate that you're ready for more. You want more responsibility and are willing to say "put me in, coach."

  • A resourceful problem-solver. YYou make a thoughtful effort to work through problems independently, use the resources available to you, and exercise good judgment about when to ask questions or bring others in.

  • Willing to absorb the unglamorous work. You see real value in getting your hands dirty on the details, since you understand this is how you learn the business.

  • Tech-savvy. You pick up new tools and systems quickly.

  • A strong communicator, especially in client-facing situations: clear, professional, and appropriately concise.

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented. You naturally create order, keep track of details, follow through on commitments, and notice when something is missing or doesn't quite add up.

  • A skilled multi-tasker. You can switch between tasks and priorities without losing quality, and manage multiple deadlines at once.

  • An active learner. You're comfortable digging into unfamiliar material, synthesizing what you learn, asking good questions, and building expertise over time.

  • Adaptable across altitude. You can move between hands-on execution, collaborative teamwork, and quick-response mode throughout the day.

Requirements

  • Able to work in the DC office at least 3 days per week with a set schedule, and may work some evenings and weekends.

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent professional experience

  • 2-4 years of professional work experience, including internships

  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to synthesize notes and information clearly and professionally

  • Comfort with digital/technical productivity and collaboration tools (e.g., Google Workspace and Suite Projects, project trackers, scheduling tools); willingness and ability to quickly learn new systems

  • Demonstrated ability to manage logistics and details across multiple concurrent tasks

  • Interest in public sector work, education, workforce development, or mission-driven organizations

  • Experience with social media platforms or basic website content management (e.g., LinkedIn, Wix is a plus)

Growth Path

This role is a launching point, not a landing spot. We're looking for someone thinking about how this position fits into their broader career trajectory, and we're invested in helping you grow into higher-altitude business operations and project work over time.
